How Do You Test for a Sinus Infection?

A cold's congestion, sore throat, and headache usually clear up within a week. But when those symptoms linger, keep coming back, or suddenly get worse again, sinusitis is often the real cause. Sinusitis simply means your sinuses have become inflamed, typically following a viral or bacterial infection. The tricky part is telling it apart from a stubborn cold using symptoms alone — which is exactly where testing comes in.

How sinusitis is diagnosed

Getting a definite answer starts with a visit to an ENT.At Noel ENT, that exam typically begins with a review of your symptoms and a look inside your nose and ears with a lighted scope called an otoscope. In many cases, visible swelling, drainage, and congestion make the diagnosis clear right away.

When the picture isn't quite that obvious, we may move to a nasal endoscopy — a quick in-office procedure using a thin, flexible scope with a camera on the end. After numbing the nose with a spray, we guide the scope in for a close, detailed view of the sinus passages, which is often enough to confirm sinusitis definitively.

When additional testing is needed

If symptoms are dragging on or something more complicated is suspected, a few additional tools may come into play. A CT scan gives a much more detailed picture of the sinus cavities and can reveal inflammation that's too deep for a scope to show. If a bacterial or fungal infection seems likely, we may take a swab from inside the sinuses — lab analysis isn't needed for most cases, but it becomes important when an infection isn't responding to treatment as expected. And since allergies are a common trigger behind recurring sinusitis, an allergy test can help pin down exactly what's setting off your symptoms, particularly duringLouisiana's long pollen and mold seasons.

Can you tell without seeing a doctor?

There's no way to be completely sure you're dealing with sinusitis without a professional exam, but a cluster of these symptoms is a strong signal:

● Persistent cough

● Nasal congestion that won't let up

● Thick, green or yellow nasal discharge

● Pressure or pain across the forehead or temples

● Mucus dripping down the back of the throat

● Tenderness below the eyes or across the bridge of thenose

● A dulled or absent sense of smell

● Ongoing fatigue
