How To Treat Clogged Ears

A clogged ear can turn an ordinary day into a frustrating one, between straining to hear conversations and that constant sense of pressure. The good news is that most clogged ears have a clear, treatable cause, and an ENT can usually pinpoint what's going on and get you relief quickly.

What's causing the blockage?

Before you can treat a clogged ear, it helps to know why it happened. A few conditions account for most cases:

● Eustachian tube blockage: The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear to the back of your throat and keeps pressure balanced on either side of the eardrum. A cold, sinus infection, or seasonal allergy flare-up can swell the lining of that tube and trap fluid behind it, which leaves the ear feeling full, muffled, or achy.

● Earwax buildup: Earwax is supposed to be there —it protects and cleans the ear canal — but it can harden and block sound from getting through. Reaching for a cotton swab to dig it out usually makes things worse, since swabs tend to push wax deeper rather than remove it.

● Pressure changes: Driving along I-10 through hill country, or flying out of Lafayette Regional, can clog your ears just from the rapid change in altitude. The Eustachian tube sometimes can't equalize fast enough, and that pressure difference is what you feel.

Home remedies worth trying first

Many clogged ears clear up within a few hours on their own. If yours doesn't, a handful of simple steps often help, especially if a blocked Eustachian tube is the culprit — clearing it sooner rather than later lowers the odds of a secondary ear infection:

● An over-the-counter decongestant or saline nasal spray

● Breathing in steam from a hot shower, or holding a warm washcloth over the affected ear

● Chewing gum, yawning, or gently working your jaw to help the Eustachian tube pop open

● Over-the-counter ear drops designed to soften wax

● Professional ear irrigation, if wax is the suspected cause

When is it time to see a specialist?

If home care isn't cutting it after a day or two, or if you're also dealing with ear pain, drainage, fever, or ringing, it's worth having it looked at. At Noel ENT, we can examine the ear canal and eardrum, identify exactly what's trapped and where, and treat it properly rather than leaving you to guess. That might mean professional wax removal, treatment for an underlying sinus or allergy issue through our allergy relief program, or care for nasal congestion that's keeping the Eustachian tube from doing its job.

If your ears have been clogged for more than a couple of days, don't just live with it. Schedule an appointment with Noel ENT and let our Lafayette or Abbeville team find the cause and clear it up.
