Living With Chronic Sinusitis

A single sinus infection is miserable enough for a week or two. Chronic sinusitis — sinus inflammation lasting twelve weeks or longer, or infections that keep recurring — is a different kind of challenge, one that can quietly wear down your energy, sleep, and day-to-day comfort if it isn't managed well.

What chronic sinusitis feels like day to day

Unlike an acute infection with a clear beginning and end, chronic sinusitis often settles into a baseline of symptoms that just doesn't fully go away: ongoing congestion, thick drainage, facial pressure, reduced sense of smell, and a tired, foggy feeling that becomes almost normal. Many patients describe constantly feeling "not quite sick, but not quite well" either.

Why it sticks around

Chronic sinusitis usually has an underlying driver that keeps the cycle going — allergies, nasal polyps, a structural issue like a deviated septum, or persistent inflammation that antibiotics alone can't fix, since antibiotics only treat active bacterial infections and not the underlying inflammation. Louisiana's long allergy season and humidity don't help, either, since they keep nasal tissue inflamed and congested for much of the year.

Managing it day to day

● Saline nasal rinses to flush out allergens, mucus, and irritants

● Running a humidifier to keep nasal tissue from drying out, especially with air conditioning running most of the year

● Identifying and avoiding your specific triggers through allergy testing

● Staying consistent with prescribed nasal sprays or other maintenance treatment, rather than only using them during flare-ups

When it's time for more than maintenance

If you've been managing symptoms for months without real improvement, it's worth getting a full evaluation rather than continuing to treat each flare-up as it comes. At Noel ENT, that might include in-office imaging to see what's happening deep in the sinuses, allergy testing to identify triggers, or a conversation about procedures like balloon sinuplasty for patients whose anatomy is part of the problem.

You don't have to just live with chronic sinusitis. Schedule an appointment with Noel ENT and let's find a plan that actually gets you relief.
