Why Do I Have a Runny Nose When I'm Not Sick?

A runny nose with no cold, no fever, and no other symptoms in sight is more common than most people realize. When it's not an infection, the cause is usually one of two things: allergies, or a condition called non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis.

It could be allergies, even without classic symptoms

Allergic rhinitis doesn't always come with the itchy, watery eyes people expect. Sometimes a runny or drippy nose is the main symptom, triggered by pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. Since Louisiana's pollen calendar stays active most of the year, allergy-driven runny noses can crop up in any season.

Non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis

If allergy testing comes back negative but the drip continues, non-allergic rhinitis is often the explanation. It happens when the blood vessels inside the nose overreact to everyday triggers that have nothing to do with allergens, including:

● Sudden temperature or humidity changes, like walking from Louisiana heat into air conditioning

● Strong smells — perfume, cleaning products, cigarette smoke

● Spicy foods (sometimes called "gustatory rhinitis")

● Certain medications, including some blood pressure drugs and overused decongestant sprays

● Hormonal changes, including pregnancy

● Stress

Getting to the real cause

Because allergies and non-allergic rhinitis are treated differently, it's worth getting an actual diagnosis rather than guessing with over-the-counter medications. At Noel ENT, allergy testing can rule allergens in or out, and if the cause turns out to be non-allergic, there are still effective treatment options — from prescription nasal sprays to addressing underlying chronic rhinitis directly.

If a mystery runny nose has become a daily annoyance, schedule an appointment with Noel ENT and let's figure out what's actually causing it.
