Why Do Older Adults Experience Ringing in Their Ears?

Tinnitus — that persistent ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound — becomes noticeably more common as people age, and there are specific, well-understood reasons why older adults experience it more often than younger patients.

Age-related hearing loss is the biggest factor

The tiny hair cells inside the inner ear that convert sound into signals the brain can interpret naturally decline with age, a condition called presbycusis. As these cells are damaged or lost, the brain sometimes compensates by generating phantom sound — which is what tinnitus actually is. This is why tinnitus and age-related hearing loss so often show up together.

A lifetime of noise exposure adds up

Years of exposure to loud machinery, lawn equipment, music, or occupational noise accumulate over a lifetime, and the cumulative effect on the inner ear tends to show up later in life, even if any single exposure years ago didn't seem significant at the time.

Other contributing factors in older adults

● Earwax buildup, which becomes more common with age and can both cause and worsen tinnitus

● Circulatory changes that affect blood flow near the ear

● Certain medications, including some used to manage blood pressure or other chronic conditions common later in life

● Jaw joint (TMJ) issues, which can produce tinnitus-like symptoms

It's not just something to live with

Tinnitus in older adults is common, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth evaluating — especially since it's often connected to hearing loss that's also affecting day-to-day communication and quality of life. At Noel ENT, a diagnostic hearing evaluation can determine whether hearing loss is contributing to your tinnitus, and our tinnitus management program can help make the sound far less noticeable day to day.

If ringing in your ears has become a constant companion, schedule an appointment with Noel ENT and let's see what can be done.
