What does the thyroid do?
The thyroid is a gland in the lower neck that plays a huge role in our metabolism. It also helps control growth, development, and hormones in the body. It regulates these bodily functions by releasing certain amounts of hormones into the blood.
What are the early warning signs of thyroid problems that I should look for?
It is hard to properly diagnose someone with a thyroid problem without conducting tests but a few key symptoms to look out for include:
- Increased exhaustion or tiredness
- Resting heart rate increase
- Increased anxious feelings
- Weight gain or loss
- Shaky hands or body twitches
- Cold intolerance
- Feeling too hot
- Trouble concentrating
- Loss of hair
- Digestive issues (Diarrhea or Constipation)
- Muscle aches
- Trouble swallowing
- Changes in menstrual cycle
- Dry or oily skin
- Issues staying asleep
- Dry eyes, watery eyes, red eyes, double vision, bulging eyes
- Growth on the neck
What's wrong with my thyroid?
The four main conditions are hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, and thyroid nodules. All of these conditions require treatment and it is difficult to self diagnose these issues, so we recommend you schedule an appointment with Noel ENT today if you are experiencing any symptoms.
Hypothyroidism occurs when the body is lacking the thyroid hormone. This may be because a gland is not working like it should be.
This is when you have too much of the thyroid hormone instead of not enough. It is just as bad as hypothyroidism and Grave’s disease is a common culprit of hyperthyroidism.
Thyroiditis occurs when the thyroid gland becomes inflamed. A common cause of thyroiditis is caused by infection which means that people who suffer from chronic sinus conditions may be more at risk. In some cases, hyperthyroidism can turn into thyroiditis.
The nodules are more visible than any of the other common thyroid problems. Thyroid nodules are actual bumps in the thyroid that can go from small to large if left unchecked. Thyroid nodules should be checked immediately if you notice them.
Thyroid Treatment Options
Your treatment plan will be based on which condition you are suffering from and whether or not an Ent specialist is needed. Normally, an Ent is needed when the nodules are involved. You may need an ultrasound or biopsy in order to figure out if the nodule is cancerous. If it is then you may need surgery to remove it but if not, other tests might be done to figure out the cause. Some thyroid treatment options include:
If medication is right for you then we will help you narrow down which medications would be best for your situation. Most medicines are in the form of a pill and are taken daily. There are also injections that may be given.
If you have tried medication or if your thyroid has a potential to become cancerous surgery might be the best route for you. After surgery, you will most likely also be prescribed medication.
